World of Genomics

World of Genomics

I was lucky enough to participate in the event “World of Genomics 2019” an event organized by the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology (IGB) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This last event was held at the National Academy of Science Building in Washington DC. I had the opportunity to talk about science to people of all ages, and I definitely enjoyed explaining to kids a little bit about plants, GMOs, water use in plants, and new technologies in agriculture.

CREATING MUSIC WITH DATA

CREATING MUSIC WITH DATA

SOUND OF SCIENCE (SOS) is a initiative that allows scientists and musicians to work together and create music from scientific data.

M.O. Abbott was the musician that took some of my data and created an electronic sonification, you can heard the melody in this link.

Ekpapalek an initiative to empower student Latinos/as

Ekpapalek an initiative to empower student Latinos/as

Ekpapalek is an initiative to empower student Latinos/as to develop their career with the objective to give them the opportunity to pursue their dreams and become the new social and economic leaders of Latin America. Clarissa is the founder of this program. I meet her through video chat when she was still pursuing her graduate studies in Australia and when I was going to be there for a work meeting. I admire her enthusiasm and passion for trying to build a better community by focusing on education. Thus, I became interested in Ekpapalek and especially in the mentor program where mentors dedicate some hours a month to advise young people about graduate programs, internships, grants and about their personal experience as an international graduate student.

Here is the link of a video summarizing the first year of Ekpapalek and Ekpapalek Mujeres (for women). Ekpapalek Mujeres is the new fledgling project for Clarissa where she can be more focused on empowerment trough training and education to women in rural areas throughout Latin America.

Mini Academia de Ciencia y Tecnología (MaCTec)

MaCTec (http://www.mactecperu.com/) is an initiative created by Javier Navarro, Professor  at the University of Texas, who believe that a way to improve our society is by empowering young girls and by encourage them to develop critical thinking. MaCTec does this by giving the opportunity to young girls to participate in free scientific workshops for around 8 months. All the work done here is voluntary.

I have had the opportunity to participate in this initiative since 2014, giving feedback to the workshops and preparing a photosynthesis workshop with Daisy Unsihuay. The most meaningful part of this work is to contribute to a better life for this young girls.
